Living in a very large city often means that we sacrifice space for convenience. But, at the same time, large cities whose factories and warehouses have been relocated elsewhere, to more affordable locations, are blessed with what was left behind - a tremendous wealth of old buildings, which are being transformed into living spaces.
One of the greatest appeals of lofts is that such high and undivided space allows the owners to create their own living environment and express their style. They have the control over how their space is divided, limited only by the, prosaic as it may be, location of plumbing.
Finding such uses for old buildings can revive run-down areas in the heart of great cities. Such transformation happened in London and New York, and is now happening in Toronto. Hot real estate market, which Toronto has been enjoying for a number of years, encouraged numerous loft conversions. Exceptional heights, floor-to-ceiling windows and rugged industrial features - loft apartments look great, and are bound up with a potent and alluring set of associations: light, space, freedom, and the vibrant cultural quarters in the heart of the inner city. They are popular not only with the young crowd, but also with mature buyers that want a special kind of place.
Art looks great in these lofty spaces, and the height compensates for the sometimes-cramped area. Some of the lofts are small - just a 'pied a terre', but the larger ones can be breathtakingly beautiful. Most of these apartments are located in old factory buildings, and have no swimming pools or security personnel. Lack of these features is, however, more than compensated by the proportionally lower maintenance fees.
